I don't know about anyone else but when I have an IM shift that lasts longer than 2 hours it drags on and on and.....
This is my four-hour shift today and already I've visited the little librarian's room twice, grabbed some delicious butter cookies for a snack, and drank all of my green tea. I still have an hour and a half left.
I think my optimal IM shift is 2 hours. Does anyone else have any feelings on this?

I much prefer coving IM from my office, where I don't think I care about my shift length very much since it's just on in the background. At the desk I have a harder time signing on and off at the right times and am more likely to have to go help someone.
I agree that 2 hours is about as long as I would care to do IM ref. I have been doing it from my office, which I don't like because I feel stuck. Let's face it, there just isn't a perfect way to handle IM so all we can do is the best we can do.
